Surface and Space Class

© 2014 S.P. Goodman
© 2014 S.P. Goodman

We wanted to remind everyone that the Surface and Space class, taught by Steve Goodman, is continuing June 2nd and June 9th from 10 AM – 2 PM. If you are planning to take part it you will need to reserve a spot now as it is almost full. Just contact us at 802.860.4972 or email us at john@vermontartsupply.com. Thank you!

This four-week class, designed for novice to intermediate artists, will begin with the basics of representational painting and lead the participant to more advanced techniques. The emphasis will be on studio work, painting still life from direct observation and using photographs as reference material for landscapes.

We will start with an introduction to the fundamentals of representational painting: strong drawing skills, composition, color, value, and edges, and then advance to working in a loose, painterly style, paying special attention to expressive brushwork while maintaining descriptive detail. We’ll also explore the interplay between the surface of a painting and the representational space depicted. The end result will be a deeper understanding of your own visual language within the context of representational painting.

This workshop will consist of demos, short exercises, gentle group critiques, and plenty of free time to paint with personal attention from the instructor.

Gallery Opening at the Flynn

Our owner, John, recently curated “Retrospective Works of Sara Bridgman 1967-2014” at the Amy E. Tarrant Gallery at the Flynn Center in downtown Burlington. The opening was a huge success and we took a few photos for you to enjoy. The installation will be up in the gallery through the beginning of August, so if you haven’t stopped by yet you absolutely should!

From the Flynn’s Website:

Bridgman’s art began in the 1970s with etchings and she later incorporated oil painting into her work. She spent a good deal of time in the 1980s exploring landscapes. It was during this period that she formed a strong bond by using a practice she calls “using the magic and wonder and developing the spirit of art and sight.” Working in the 1990s, Bridgman worked tirelessly and quietly and became “close to being with the power and intelligence of life itself.”

Bridgman’s paintings of Mary Francis La’Monge began when she envisioned Mary Francis wearing a see-through dress with daisies all over. Mary Francis is an inspirational presence in Bridgman’s art.

Bridgman studied art at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, and she spent four years studying etching at The School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. Her work has been shown at Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Ithaca, NY; Saint Michael’s College, Colchester, VT; Pierson Library, Shelburne, VT; Webb & Parson Gallery, Burlington, VT; and most recently at JDK Gallery, Burlington, VT.

A Collaborative Mural Outside our Store

UVM seniors Viscaya Wagner and Eliza Carver are finishing up a massive mural outside of our store for their final independent study project. The two graphic design students have been friends since kindergarten and call this a “long-coming collaboration.” Their mural is all about finding home in unexpected places and the artists decided that a large-scale, public display would be the best forum. They wanted their project to be less formal and are both very interested in street art. The girls describe the bright, vivid colors and surreal subject as “a world where both of our creatures and characters can live in the same place.” Come to 277 Pine Street to view the mural in person.
